Signed Fine Art Print of Three Underwing Moths
Signed Fine Art Print of Three Underwing Moths
Three different species of moths in the genus Catocala, commonly known as underwings, in a fine art print of my original 11 x 15 watercolor painting. These night-flying moths rest on trees during the day, where their “cryptic” forewings hide brightly striped hindwings. I’ve spent many nights in various North American forests, painting fermented fruit bait on tree trunks in a century-old practice known as "sugaring for moths." When underwing moths came to feed on the bait, their brightly striped hindwings seem to glow in the beam of the flashlight.
