Signed Fine Art Print of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly
Signed Fine Art Print of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly
The black swallowtail should be familiar to anyone with a vegetable garden in the eastern US, since the caterpillar can often be found on nearly every carrot and dill plant in sight. The immature larvae resemble little bird droppings, but fully grown caterpillars are bright green with black and yellow stripes], and resemble toxic monarch caterpillars. I sometimes entertain myself by giving the grown ones a little squeeze, and watch them pop out a small red snake’s tongue from behind the head, a protective adaptation that all swallowtail caterpillars possess.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
