Limited Edition Buckeye and Snout Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
Limited Edition Buckeye and Snout Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
This numbered and signed work, from a limited run of 50 fine art prints, makes a one-of-a-kind gift.
These butterflies are not closely related, but as a young citizen scientist I would often find them flying together. Buckeyes are quick, brown butterflies that, on landing, will flash the big beautiful “eyes” on their upper wings, startling predators. Buckeyes are pugnacious and will fight anyone; they are especially known to have an issue with the big Carolina grasshoppers with whom they share their dusty roads and trails. The snout butterfly, well, sometimes a name just says it all. I recently saw one drinking at a fountain in a Chicago park, completely unnoticed by anyone but me.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
