Limited Edition Fine Art Print of the Genus Delias

These gorgeous butterflies, native to the Indo-Malayan realm, are related to the ubiquitous, and invasive, European cabbage white butterfly. The group is in fact world-wide, and many of its members, like the genus Delias, are spectacularly colored. I chose to paint this group as a kind of reminder to myself that even the most humble of insects often have remarkable relatives elsewhere in the world.

This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
