Signed Fine Art Print of the Great Spangled Fritillary
Signed Fine Art Print of the Great Spangled Fritillary
Speyeria cybele, the great spangled fritillary, is one of several similar species. As a boy I chased these beautiful butterflies across sunny fields, their bright orange wings seeming to glow in the sun; underneath, this species has reflective silver spots set against a mahogany ground color. It was a prize among young Lepidopterists, and I still have in my collection the few specimens that I was able to track down, carefully pinned and labelled and set among other typical butterflies of the upper midwest.
This painting is another in a series of works that faithfully and precisely reproduce the beautiful colors and physical design of the insects I have grown up studying since childhood. I paint in the style of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, and whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration.
