Limited Edition Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print (Copy)
This numbered and signed work, from a limited run of 50 fine art prints, makes a one-of-a-kind gift.
Although it is less common in the northern than in the southern states, you will still sometimes see this spectacular butterfly in Chicago's city parks and suburban gardens. Like the dark form of the tiger swallowtail, the spicebush bears a close resemblance to the bad-tasting pipevine swallowtail. The striking caterpillar of the spicebush mimics a snake, and even though it's small it has huge false eyespots that are enough to give predators pause.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
