Signed Fine Art Print of the Ornithoptera Goliath Birdwing Butterfly
Signed Fine Art Print of the Ornithoptera Goliath Birdwing Butterfly
When birdwing butterflies were first reported by European explorers in New Guinea and beyond they were met with skepticism by some people. Both unbelievably huge and fantastically colored, with reflective blue, green, and gold, they quickly became famous as the “birdwing butterflies.” Now they are largely protected from unethical collectors, although the much more threatening issue of protecting their forest habitat is an on-going struggle.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
