This species, and several that are very much like it, are among the most widespread butterflies in the world; there is even a variety native to the Hawaiian Islands, which has only one other endemic butterfly species. It’s thought that the painted lady is a mimic of the monarch, which may give it protection from predators. I was always happy to see this big, beautiful butterfly on the wing throughout the summer, especially those times when a migration filled a clover field with dozens of whirling orange butterflies.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
