Limited Edition Question Mark Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
Limited Edition Question Mark Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
This numbered and signed work, from a limited run of 50 fine art prints, makes a one-of-a-kind gift.
This beautiful butterfly is one of several similar species that fly in early summer. The common name, question mark, refers to the shape of a small splash of reflective silver on the hindwing underside; the similar but smaller comma butterfly has, predictably, a small silver comma mark. These “punctuation butterflies” have bright orange uppersides and more or less cryptic undersides, so when they land they immediately blend in with leaves and ground cover. The caterpillars feed on elms, a group of very common urban trees.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
