Limited Edition Fine Art Print of the Red-Backed Mouse Spider

I chose to paint this species because of its fearsome reputation and its striking design. The Australian red-headed mouse spider is one of the funnel-web spiders that are much feared on that continent. They roam around at night, and sometimes wind up in shoes. The bite of some of these spiders can be fatal, and the effects of the venom are terrifying. 

This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
