Signed Fine Art Print of the Spotted Lanternfly and Relatives
Signed Fine Art Print of the Spotted Lanternfly and Relatives
As beautiful as they are, lanternflies are not closely related to butterflies or moths. Instead, they are related in both form and natural history to aphids and cicadas. The spotted lanternfly, L. delicatula, has become notorious in recent years as a destructive invasive species on the East Coast. Despite the damage it causes, this insect is nonetheless very beautiful.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
