Limited Edition Sulphur and Cabbage White Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
Limited Edition Sulphur and Cabbage White Butterfly Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
This numbered and signed work, from a limited run of 50 fine art prints, makes a one-of-a-kind gift.
I chose to paint these two species together because they are indelibly linked in my memories of summer fields, in which these two insects were by far the most common butterflies on the wing. C. eurytheme is one of two very similar and occasionally interbreeding species (the other is C. protodice). P. rapae is the infamous imported European cabbage butterfly. This innocuous little white number is a destructive invasive species that occurs literally everywhere, and can be a garden pest on a wide range of cruciferous vegetables. Both are emblematic of summer, and may be found just about anywhere there are plants and sunshine.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
