Signed Fine Art Print of Three Beautiful Swallowtail Butterfly Species
Signed Fine Art Print of Three Beautiful Swallowtail Butterfly Species
These three butterflies are only a small sample of a group that is, like many butterfly groups, found around the world. In the case of the swallowtails, not all have hindwing tails or any other obvious feature that ties them to their family. However, all Papilio caterpillars possess an osmeterium, a red, forked gland that pops from behind the head when the larva feels threatened. This adaptation looks like a snake's tongue and smells terrible – a pretty effective way to discourage a bird that is thinking about eating you!
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
