Limited Edition Emperor Butterflies Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
Limited Edition Emperor Butterflies Signed and Numbered Fine Art Print
This numbered and signed work, from a limited run of 50 fine art prints, makes a one-of-a-kind gift.
These two butterflies are not uncommon, but are very seldom noticed by any but the most attentive naturalist. Since hackberry is a very common urban weed tree, A. celtis is sometimes found zipping around busy roadsides and alleys in cities like my hometown of Chicago. The tawny emperor is much less common and generally found in more wild places. They are both subtly beautiful butterflies, another example of the diversity that can be found in unexpected places.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
