The common name of this magnificent butterfly, the tiger swallowtail, perfectly captures both the bright pattern and the effortless power with which it patrols its territory. You may see them in early summer, flying high in ash and wild cherry trees, where females deposit eggs. Some females, like the one pictured in this painting, are a dark smoky gray; they are more common in the South, where it’s thought that this adaptation evolved to mimic the bad-tasting pipevine swallowtail.
This painting faithfully and precisely reproduces the beautiful colors and striking design of the insects I have pursued and studied since childhood. My style is inspired by that of my grandfather, Arthur Cushman, a noted illustrator who worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the USDA, whose paintings and drawings helped set the standard for scientific illustration in the mid 20th century.
